S8E1: Deep Breath

This episdoe, rightfully so, had a lot of hype surrounding it. Not only was it a series premier, but it was the premier of the new Doctor.

I don't think many people had much doubt that Capaldi would be fantastic, aside from the people who are still upset that he's not young like Matt and David were. But let that go. He was absolutely fantastic, as most expected. The character's arch through out the story was clear: he starts out confused and disoriented from regenerating, and becomes more and more coherent as the story goes on. That was done beautifully, not only in the acting, but it was a finer moment for Moffat's writing as well. The scene about the bedroom was just perfect.

What's in Store for "The Time of the Doctor"? SPOILERS

Click on the picture to see it enlarged.

So we know that stuff's gonna go down this Christmas. Regeneration, what have you. But what else. The above picture is official from the BBC and it tells us a bit about what to expect.

  1. Cyberman: 11's holding a cyberman's head. Can we take a second to appreciate the expression on its face? And it looks like it have been repaired prior to the decapitation. So, there will be cybermen.
  2. The Silence: They're ba-ack! Hiding in the background, those cheeky buggers. Hopefully we will finally have their mystery explained....
  3. Weeping Angels: There, buried in the snow! Can they move if they don't know if someone's looking? I don't know. Based on Moffat being the creature behing the angels and the prominence they have in Eleven's life, I assume that they will be making an appearance.
  4. Minor: Near that tree, there's a pulley. What's it doing there? The world may never know....
  5. The Clock: It is pointing to 12. From the 50th special, I'd say that it's 12 midnight--the dawn of a new day.
  6. Clara: She is definitely checking out the Doctor there. Well, she's sure in for a surprise come Capaldi.....
  7. Eleven: That's a pretty sweet bowtie, but look at his face. It's all sad--he know's he's about to die.
  8. The Light in the Clock-tower: It looks like a lighthouse style thing--not a bell. A beacon? We shall see...
  9. And finally, Peter: Look there, between Clara and the Doctor. In the flames, Capaldi's face is evident. Nice job with Photoshop, Doctor Who.
Then, there was the little 11-second preview: "This planet...what's it called?" "Trenzalore." Whose voice said Trenzalore? Was it me, or did it sound a lot like Alex Kingston? And, now, Trenzalore's a planet? I thought it was a field.
Here's my thought for you to ponder: What if the Doctor's name is Trenzalore?

PODCAST: Dalek and Important Update

Due to unforeseen constraints of our previous podcast hosting service, the TARDIStyle podcast has been moved. Please note that if you had subscribed via iTunes that that specific feed will no longer be updated. Instead, you can re-subscribe here.

With that said, I am proud to announce the episode that I think has been the best so far: Dalek! It is avalable here. Please note that plot through "The Name of the Doctor" is discussed in this podcast.

"Hide" and "Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS"

Hide

"Hide" was a bit boring. It may be because I have ADHD (legitimately), or that it just wasn't amazing. It definitely had some high stakes, I'll give it that, and some very interesting dropped hints as to the social plot in the scene where Clara and Emma Grayling (the psychic) have a drink together. Wiskey is the eleventh most disgusting thing ever invented! (I wouldn't know). I was a bit confused--was Hilda supposed to be in love with that monster that looked like Voldemort mated with a Racnoss? I found that Neil Cross' writing was much better than it was in his last episode, which was "Rings of Akhatan". The refrence to Metebelis III was nice ("The Green Death", "Planet of the Spiders") Some people thought that the genre crossover into horror was a bit far-flung and strange, but I think we can all agree that David Tennant pulled off the orange space suit much better than Matt Smith.

Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS

I was seriously enthralled by "Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS". As well as being absolutely horrifying at some parts, it was extremely high-stakes, threatening to kill Clara again. I have a friend who will be very disappointed that it doesn't feature the wardrobe room. I thought we would see more of the TARDIS, as I'm sure most people did, but it did feature parts of it that I hadn't even thought of, like the library. By far, I think this episode was the best in the season thus far, rivalling "The Angels take Manhattan". The plot was clear and easy to follow, although complex; it was explained well. It featured many emotions and evoked many emotions. Each of the actors were showcased very well. Don't you wish more things had a big friendly button?

Time Lord/Weeping Angel Theory

SO, here is one theory about the Weeping Angels.
Remember in "End of Time", there was that woman who was ment to be the Doctor's mother?
<---her?

Well, then you probably remember how she had her eyes covered like a Weeping Angel.

Here is the cool theory I found:
"I heard that the reason they made her put her hands like that was a Timelord form of disgrace. And that she was stuck in limbo forever, until her and the other disgraced Timelords became the first weeping angels. Monsters forced into feeding of time energy, as it used to run through their veins. Now their veins were stone they need to get it other ways."
-RiverTheDetective on tumblr

If you can navigate around that grammatical train wreck, good for you.
It makes sense. Pretty much right after we see her face, the Doctor sends them through the Untempered Schism back to Gallifrey during the Last Great Time War. No one ever said that they made it back or what happened once they got there. This theory would say that they were thrown to the dawn of the universe and evolved into the angels.
What do you think?

The Title of the Last Episode of Season 7

So, what do we think?
Are they really gonna do it? Because if they do it at all, THAT needs to be saved for the 50th, if you ask me. Discuss in the comments!

The Doctor's Most Valuable Tool

Not counting the TARDIS and his intellect, there are three things that the Doctor just couldn't get by without. And I'm gonna be mean and hide the not-so-obvious one behind the pagebreak. It does contain spoilers.

Sonic Screwdriver

The Doctor with the Sonic Screwdriver in Doomsday
Fun fact: scientists have invented a device that can move objects with sound. First and most important is the sonic screwdriver. Although it doesn't work on wood and can be disabled by some hairdryers, it's been invaluable since it became more prominent in the revival series. It is "harmless... doesn't kill, doesn't wound, doesn't maim." It's simply successful at what the Doctor tries to be: something that helps and never hurts. But the Doctor does hurt and that is part of his most valuable tool.

Psychic Paper

The Doctor uses the Psychic Paper on Shakespeare
Making its twenty-sixth screen appearance in The Power of Three., psychic paper has been indispensable for the last three doctors, though far less reliable than ol' sonic. In Army of Ghosts, we see the psychic paper fail for the first time when Rose uses it on Rajesh, a Torchwood employee, who then tells us that he, like all members of Torchwood, has a basic level of psychic training. Very soon again we also see the paper fail when the Doctor uses it with William Shakespeare in The Shakespeare Code because Shakespeare is too intelligent for it to have worked. But it plays on the mind, which leads me to the Doctor's most valuable tool.

New Episode Reaction: The Bells of Saint John SPOILERS

I may be in the US, but I watched the premier with the UK.
And I have to say, I thought it would be a lot better.
The episode gets 2 1/2 stars.
That is not to say that it was bad and you are all not in for a treat, but for a premier episode, it was very lacking. Spoilers below.

They Killed Clara!

I live in the US, in just a half hour (in good traffic) from Manhattan, so you must forgive me for being somewhat delayed at the latest episodes. Of course, living near New York is a huge problem: the Doctor can't take the TARDIS back there because the timelines are too scrambled! It's a timey-wimey bi lizard with major temporal distortions. I can't be living here if it means I have no chances of being whisked away by a man in a blue box.
Enough of the digression. I just watched the Asylum of the Daleks, The Power of Three, The Angels Take Manhattan, and The Snowmen and its prequels, and just in time for this Sunday's online release of The Bells of Saint John, too.
Spoilers--click "read more" to see the rest. Seriously. If you haven't seen Asylum of the Daleks yet, don't read it!

Is the Doctor Real?

As you may know, The Doctor is Real Day is 11 May. There are people (and they are starting to include myself..) who believe that the Doctor is real.
Here's one theory by Tumlr user mary-june about the existance of the Doctor. The Tumblr tag is #doctor who is real.

There are some slight spoilers. Click "read more" see the rest.

The Doctor's Death Wish: A Mad Man with a Box SPOILERS

This post is full of spoilers--think of all the spoilers it could possibly have, then add a suitcase of spoilers. Click "Read More" to see it.

The Doctor's Greatest Enemy

The Doctor has three great enemies  the Daleks, of course, the Cybermen, and the one people leave out, himself. He is his own worst enemy.
Both the Daleks and the Cybermen have been enginered to be emotionless. The Doctor has his emotions-900 years of emotions. Those traits are at the core of their greatest weakness.

A Dalek

The Daleks are a race bent on exterminating all things not Dalek. They’re little ugly one-eyed octopus looking things inside a robotic casing made of Dalekanium They are not impossible to escape—its just extremely very not likely. The creator of the Daleks took out their emotions to make them better fighters.

A Cyberman
The Cybermen, on the other hand  are not alien. Sure, they were created in an alternate universe and fell through the Cardiff rift, but they are native, so to speak, to Earth. They are humans who have been “upgraded” by having their brains put into a metal suit and having emotions neutralized, because the man who created them found emotions to be too painful.

David Tennant as The Tenth Doctor
The Doctor’s most dangerous enemy is what attracts us to the show. Not only are we watching a man fight threats beyond our imaginations, we are watching a man fight himself. The Doctor is the last of his species. Although he is an alien, he is exquisitely human. He looks like a human (or, as he puts it, humans look like Time Lords as Time Lords came first) Being a Time Lord is “a sum of knowledge, a code, a shared history, a shared suffering” (The Doctor’s Daughter). Being a Time Lord was having a connection with your people that all humans long for. (People=members of the same species, relatively generic, human=Homo sapien) The Doctor had all of that, and he blames himself for its destruction in The Time War. He had it all, and now he has nothing at all. He grasps out for a companion all the time, knowing that they can stay with him forever, but he cannot stay with them forever: at the start of the most recent revival (2005), the Doctor is already 900 years old. That is where The Curse of the Time Lords comes in--"[they] don't age. [They] regenerate. But humans decay. [Humans] wither and [humans] die. Imagine watching that happen to someone you... [Humans] can spend the rest of [their] life with me. But I can't spend the rest of mine with you. I have to live on, alone." He is truly and utterly alone in the world.
